Jopy is not a person, it is a group named for a graffiti tag. two of the jopists are lanky fellows with red hair. another is also relatively slender but blonde. other folks have drifted in and out of the Jopy fold over time, including miscellaneous family members and the occasional insect. richard dunlap has provided production assistance and collaborates with Jopy members on other projects as well.

the first instance of Jopy music occurred when two sibling jopists stitched together tape recordings of world war two radio broadcasts with digital keyboard preset drum loops and very poorly recorded piano as adolescents. this would eventually lead to a fairly mainstream jazz duo that dabbled in live experimental improvisation. other instances of Jopy music happened in african drumming courses and a capella strolling tunes that got out of hand.

recorded Jopy music is produced by cutting and pasting processed field recordings, talking, hand percussion samples, children’s toy instruments, flutes, synthesizers, algorithmic software sequencers, guitars, and electric bass.
